Wetransfer.com is a site that allows users to send up to 2GB in files per transfer to other users. In order to use the service, the user enters the file(s) they want to send (up to 2GB per limit, per transfer), their email address, the email address(es) of the user(s) they would like to send the files to, and any comments the user would like to add. To enter the files, the user clicks on “Add files”, and an upload window is opened which allows the user to browse their hard drive for the files they wish to transfer. The user can add as many files as they wish as long as the 2GB limit is not exceeded.
When the user presses the “Done” button, the files are uploaded from the user's hard drive to the Wetransfer.com site. At this point, a confirmation email is sent to the user, and email(s) are sent to the recipient(s) containing a download link to the file(s). The recipient simply clicks on the download link, and a download page is opened in their browser where they can choose where to place the files on their hard drive. The recipient then presses the “Ok button” and the files are transferred from the Wetransfer.com site to the recipient's hard drive. The user can send the files to up to 20 recipients per transfer. If the user needs to transfer more than 2GB of files, they can simply do so with another transfer. Files are kept on the Wetransfer.com servers for 2 weeks after initiation of the transfer.
The Wetransfer.com site was founded in October 2009.
Competition to Wetransfer.com comes from sites such as Filefactory and MegaShares. Filefactory has a filesize limit of 300mb and allows transfer of up to 25 files per transfer. They store the files on their servers for 15 days. Filefactory requires registration to use the service. Mega Shares has a file limit of 10GB and files are kept on their servers for 25 days. Mega shares also allows for files to be password protected. Both of these services, like Wetransfer.com, are entirely free, but offer paid plans with more features.
The Wetransfer.com site has a very minimalist look and feel. The home page features advertisements in the form of background images of corporate products and logos. These advertisements are very unobtrusive. Displayed over the background is a small file upload dialog. The site is quite responsive, and although file uploads take some time to initiate, the transfer happens quickly once started. The download process is initiated almost immediately and the transfer happens very quickly.
No registration to the Wetransfer.com service is offered. Users simply fill out the file transfer dialog to use the service. The site makes its revenue from the advertising logos and images which are shown on the file upload and download pages.
The service is entirely free, and there is no premium membership offered to the site.
The Wetransfer.com site is recommended to anyone who wishes to easily transfer large files to other users. The service is very easy to use, does not require registration and is entirely free. If the user needs to transfer files larger than 2GB, then they will probably need to use one of the paid file transfer services that are available. As long as the user does not need to transfer any single file that is over 2GB, Wetransfer.com is an excellent service.
